What is going on with our planet?
by Barbora Misakova

I am afraid there is something wrong happening to our planet. Earthquakes and consequent tsunamis, heavy rains and storms causing landslides – all these natural disasters are happening too often these days. What is worse, we cannot even estimate which part of the world will be hit next. More than one month ago Haiti was destroyed by catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake. It is about two weeks what Portugal was destroyed by torrential rain and consequent landslides that killed 42 people and more than 120 were injured. On February 27th earthquake rating a magnitude of 8.8 hit Chile which produced small tsunamis leading to Hawaii. Today it is Uganda where hundreds of peo! ple are missing and at least 80 were killed after landslide triggered by torrential rain which buried entire villages in eastern part of this landlocked African country. Villagers also said that about 150 people were at trading centre when huge rocks slid down the hillsides. From them only eight people survived so far. The picture of desperate people digging with bare hands and simple tools just to find survivors – that is reality! Tarsis Kabwegyere, Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees told Reuters that “about 300 people are feared buried by the landslide and the landslides are expected to continue as the rains intensify in the region.” Police and volunteers are helping with rescuing. Red Cross had sent doctors. But it is not enough as there is still danger of rain recurrence. Uganda and Kenya have had sustained rain for much of the past two months, which is usually a dry period between rainy seasons.
