Kaczynski's funeral
by Barbora Misakova
Poland is mourning. Thousands of people are on the streets putting flowers and candles for their late president Lech Kaczynski and 95 others who died last Saturday. While Kaczynski’s body was transported from Russia on Sunday and the coffin was displayed for mourners in the presidential palace, the remains of the other 95 victims of the crash will be sent to Moscow for identification. Poland’s acting president Bronislaw Komorowski doesn’t have a time for mourning as the memorial service is planned for Saturday and it will be followed by the burial of the presidential couple, which will take place on Sunday. As Jacek Sasin, the deputy chief of the presidenc! y told Polish public radio: “The place where the presidential couple will be buried has already been chosen by the family but cannot be announced at the moment.” Except preparations for burial, president Komorowski also has to announce the date of new presidential elections. Under Poland’s constitution he has 14 days in which he is obliged to announce the date and the election must be held within 60 days of the announcement. The irony of this tragic crash lies in fact that president and top officials were on their way to commemorate the Katyn massacre – where thousands Polish nationals were killed by Russian forces. President himself and 95 other Poles also died on Russian soil. Poland now mourns two national catastrophes and the burial of president Kaczynski and his wife will be probably the bitterest and the saddest event in the Polish political history.
