As hope is fading out, despair is growing. Rescuers in north-west China are doing their best to find any signs of life under mud that swallowed province of Gansu at the weekend. They are racing against a potential new deluge which could make the situation even worse. There are 10,000 soldiers and rescuers outside, trying to find people buried under the mountains of mud. Hundreds of medical workers together with experts in epidemic preventions have been sent to the disaster zone. Death toll surpasses 1,000 people. As officials informed, there are 1,117 people that will never come back home again and more than 600 are still missing. Fear of another wave of torrential rains an! d mudslides are multiplied by fear of an outbreak of water-borne disease which fortunately has not been reported so far. Nevertheless loudspeakers in town broadcast messages instruct residents how to protect themselves from disease. Artificial lake created from the rubble is another source of worries. The official Xinhua news agency reported that provincial authorities have evacuated areas near the lake, even though “the danger of the barrier lake collapsing suddenly has been basically eliminated”. Thousands of people are without adequate food and drinking water. Problems are also with finding safe ground where the tents could be erected, informed one of the volunteers. This is the worst flooding in a decade, which caused mudslides leveled an area five kilometers long and 300 meters wide. Cleaning the streets buried in thick mud and debris is much harder when residents are wailing and hoping the bodies of their loved ones could still be found for burial.
