Will we still be here in 2012?
by Barbora Misakova

When in 2012 should the end of the world come, then there is even more burning question: will we still be living here? How many nature disasters have we seen until now? And how many people have died up to the present? How many earthquakes have shaken with the land we are walking on and how many floods have drowned our fields? While looking for the answers, we are getting closer to much more painful truth: thousands and thousands of people around the world have been killed. And probably even more will be in the future. This time it is northwest China which has to face tropical downpours. These torrential rains triggered rocks and mud that killed 702 people and more than 1,00! 0 is still missing. Rescuers are doing their best, but with more rain forecast for later in the week, Premier Wen Jiabao is urging them to hurry. As he said: “We must fully realize the difficulties for the search and rescue work. You must race against the clock and spare no efforts in saving lives.” More than 7,000 soldiers and rescuers were hunting for survivors in Zhouqu, where homes were torn apart and streets were buried in mud as deep as two meters. Aid supplies couldn’t get through to the tens of thousands in need as roads and bridges have also been destroyed. Teams are working feverishly to repair the damages. Numbers are terrifying: more than 2,100 people were dead or missing nationwide in flood-related disasters before the Gansu mudslides. And the number is increasing constantly…
